“In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson Another talented Global Pinoy Artist to watch out for is Zol Domingo who captivates her audiences and supporters through her ethereal and lovely masterpieces!
Domingo hails from Catarman, Philippines and holds a B.S Nursing degree from Our Lady of Fatima University. Her artistic journey began at a tender age. She further discusses: “Let me begin by sharing the story of my artistic journey right from the very beginning. As a child, I discovered my passion for drawing at the tender age of three. I vividly remember filling up bond papers with my imaginative creations, and my mother lovingly compiled all my drawings, including my sketches. I cherished these artworks so much that I started collecting them and proudly displayed them on my shelf. Interestingly, my father also had a knack for drawing, particularly sketches of various machines. He became my first teacher, and we would often sit together at his table. He would pull out a sheet of bond paper, a box of Mongol pencils, and a sharpener, and we would embark on our drawing sessions. This routine became so frequent that my father decided to set up the long 6-seater table permanently in his room, ensuring that we could indulge in our artistic pursuits without disturbing him. And thus, my artistic journey truly began.” One can’t help but linger their looks at her creations which are imbued with vibrant hues!

1. At what age did you discover that you are inclined to the arts?
Answer: From a very young age, around 3 years old, I began to express my creativity through doodling, drawing, and coloring. Also, just a cute story to share, I was able to memorize the lyrics to the song "Tears in Heaven" at this age and even recorded it on a Walkman myself, which I rediscovered and listened to years later.
Let me begin by sharing the story of my artistic journey right from the very beginning. 2. How important is art in our society?
Answer: I can say that Art plays a crucial role in our society as it allows people from all walks of life to freely express themselves. It does not only preserve our culture but also stimulates critical thinking and promotes overall well-being. Art contributes significantly to the economy and adds beauty to our lives as well. Its impact is extensive, making it an essential aspect of our shared human experience.
3. Who are the famous painters whom you look up to and why?
Answer: When I was a child, I stumbled upon a painting in an encyclopedia at our home in Samar. It wasn't long before my father gave us a small book of Claude Monet's impressionist paintings, which completely captured my heart. I remember thinking to myself that I wanted to paint just like Monet, but as I grew older, I realized that I had my own unique style. Reflecting on my early years, I recall the thrill and happiness I felt when I first picked up a crayon and began coloring geometric shapes. Even before discovering Picasso, I was drawn to checkered designs and the concept of cubism fascinated me, though I didn't fully understand its complexities at the time. It was my love for cubism that led me to explore its origins and develop a deeper appreciation for it. As I continue my artistic journey, I have begun to recognize various artists, particularly renowned Filipino artists like Amorsolo, Ang Kiukok, Anita Magsaysay, and many others.
4. Describe your art style.
Answer: My art style serves as a sanctuary for me, a place where I can find solace and express myself freely. Reflecting on my early years, I recall the thrill and happiness I felt when I first picked up a crayon and began coloring geometric shapes.
In my artwork, I incorporate various geometric shapes like circles, triangles, and squares, each holding its own symbolic meaning. Squares and triangles represent structure and stability, while circles convey a softer essence and symbolize connection. Alongside these shapes, I also incorporate leaves to introduce an organic and natural element. This choice is inspired by the comforting and approachable feelings that nature evokes, and it also adds a hidden beauty to my artwork.
Capturing the essence of everyday individuals, whether it be a casual bystander, a street vendor, or a parent enjoying a moment with their children or beloved pet, is a passion of mine. The beauty lies in the simplicity of these subjects, as they possess the ability to evoke genuine emotions. It is remarkable to think that extraordinary accomplishments often stem from ordinary individuals who refuse to surrender. This subject matter holds a profound truth, embodying the concept of self-fulfilling prophecies, where one's thoughts have the power to shape their reality.
My usual artistic subject involves painting a person with one eye closed and the other eye open, symbolizing conflicting perspectives that we often need to consider. This concept is significant as our thoughts have the power to manifest into reality. Similar to life, which is riddled with contradictions, it is important to acknowledge that happiness is fleeting even at its peak, prompting us to seize every chance to experience it fully. Likewise, during our lowest moments, it is crucial to remember that sadness is not eternal and can eventually pass.
On occasion, I find myself painting my subjects with both eyes shut, symbolizing a moment of pure imagination and a desire to prolong my artistic journey within a particular artwork. However, I have yet to explore the concept of painting with both eyes open on my subjects. This approach is something I wish to keep in reserve, as it holds the potential to express something truly groundbreaking and revolutionary in my artistic expression.
5. How has art changed your life?
Answer: Engaging in the creation of art provides me with means to escape from the various forms of chaos that surround me. It serves as a gateway to tranquility, allowing me to open my heart and nourish my mind. Also, as a dedicated full-time mother, immersing myself in the world of art sets my career in motion, satisfying my desire for self-approval and positive affirmations. Through artistic expression, I find solace, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose that transcends the challenges of everyday life.
6. Do you have any plans of exploring other art genres?
Answer: Certainly! I believe stepping outside in my comfort zone will contribute to the growth and development of my own work and will allow me to broaden my horizons and discover new techniques.
7. Where do you draw inspiration from, for your creations?
Answer: My artwork is deeply influenced by the memories and experiences of my childhood as well as the mundane yet beautiful moments of everyday life. These sources of inspiration provide me with a rich tapestry of emotions, colors, and textures that I strive to capture in my creations. From the innocence and wonder of my early years to the small joys and challenges of adulthood, each aspect of my past and present finds its way onto my canvas, allowing me to express myself and connect with others through my art.
8. When you were younger, have you seen yourself becoming a visual artist?
Answer: I have never seen myself becoming a visual artist when I was younger and still a child. I have come to embrace this identity later in life. All I know that time is I love making artworks because I wanted to give it to someone or simply love doing it. I am also engaged in music and learned to play an instrument which for me also an artistic expression or outlet to keep me inspired. For me it is how I perceive myself and relationship with my creativity even regardless of external validation.
9. Which is your favorite painting among your masterpieces and why?
Answer: I have a deep appreciation for all of my artworks as they convey various emotions and meanings. However, the piece that holds a special place in my heart is titled "Mula Ngayon." This particular artwork was showcased in our graduation exhibit at the Mentoring in Art Show Philippines and was actually sold during the event. It was a piece that truly allowed me to pour out my emotions.
I am grateful to the buyer of this piece for allowing me to share that emotion with others.
10. Your works have been featured in different art exhibitions. Which among them is the most memorable for you and why?
Answer: The exhibit that left a lasting impression on me was at Artablado, featuring the theme of “Limitless Expression.” It was a collaboration between Art Show Philippines and Artablado. This exhibit not only emphasized the significance of art's diverse meanings and interpretations, but it also allowed me to showcase the artistic genre I had been striving for. My ASP mentor, Sir Fred Epistola, was truly amazed by the unique style I presented. So, up to this moment, it was a happy memory for me.
