“One word frees us all the weight and pain of life: that word is love.” -Sophocles
Our featured personality, Coach Rev. Melvinia Ford is a Holistic Life Coach and Counselor, a Certified Usui Reiki Master Practitioner, a Meditation Practitioner that works in Breath and Touch Therapy, and a metaphysical minister. She is an Alumni of the University of Metaphysics and currently a doctoral student.
She is also a graduate, and current certified teacher with the EAS (Empower, Achieve, Succeed) Master program under her mentor, Grandmother Elder, and Shaman Enolia Foti from Angola, Africa.
Rev. Melvinia's heart's passion is the empowerment of the heart, more specifically, women. Healing is so important when dealing with trauma, depression, suicide, abandonment, and abuse, to name a few.
She is the author of "What the Hell, A Life Testimony ", about her self-healing journey. Ford found out years later that there was a name for it, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which she is also certified in, along with Art Therapy.
Rev. Melvinia's training started in 1998, from a 12-hour stay in a psychiatric ward for attempted suicide. She used what she learned through her healing to help others as well. She found for herself that psychiatry and medicine were not the path for her, not discounting it but instead discovered that her healing was within, and can also be for everyone.
When asked what does she want people to know about Reiki, she answered: “I would love to get others to understand that everything they need to know and understand about themselves in mind, body and soul, all the answers to healing are within. A lot of people don’t understand the true reason for the ailments that we have. Our body talks to us. It’s more than telling us it is in pain, but we began to understand why the pain is relevant.” In our short interview below, you will get know about her self-healing journey and how has it paved the way for her to become a Holistic Life Coach and Counselor.
1. When did you realize that you wanted to take the path of being a Holistic Life Coach and Counselor? I realized that I wanted to become a life coach when I found myself in a psychiatric ward from attempted suicide. I stayed there for 24 hours and knew that it wasn’t the path of healing that I needed. It was more of a guilt trip party where they would throw in my face the mistakes that I made. After that I began a 20-year journey of self-healing which felt more like a 12 process like alcohol or narcotics anonymous. I felt like no one was listening and wondered who had truly gone through this. So, I made it my journey to help other women that never felt as though they had a voice.
2. What did you want to become when you were still a child? I really didn’t know what I wanted to be. I said nurse, but only because I was told my mom was a nurse, but I never really got into the medical field. I have always loved things like art, music, singing and dancing, so that is what I focused on. During my young adult years, I became a single mom and that was the path I took until now where I am getting back into those things I loved as a child.
3. How has being a Reiki Master affected your personal life and your relationship with other people around you? Being a Reiki Master has helped me to understand myself spiritually on a deeper level. I always knew that there was more to life than just what was on the surface, but I just didn’t know what. Reiki taught me how to go within and listen. This is also what I teach my coaching and counseling clients. There is a calmness about listening to silence and getting in touch with your body and emotions.
4. Can you please discuss a little about your passion in empowerment of the heart? One of my favorite taglines is #theheartofawoman. Why? Because to me it is the one thing that seemed to be looked over. I took time to learn and understand about my mother’s and both paternal and maternal grandmothers that went through their own share of heartache, heartbreak and abuse. Their hearts were taken advantage of, and I wanted to be the change. It was in my heart to break the curse, despite the trials that I went through for future generations in my bloodline. I also want to help other women understand that they don’t have to always hold it all in and be strong. That is okay to vent, cry, scream and express how they feel without being ridiculed or made to feel less than. To me that is the heart of every woman, to feel accepted in the skin she is in.
5. If you would like to educate people about Reiki, what would you tell them? I would love to get others to understand that everything they need to know and understand about themselves in mind, body and soul, all the answers to healing are within. A lot of people don’t understand the true reason for the ailments that we have. Our body talks to us. It’s more than telling us it is in pain, but we began to understand why the pain is relevant.
6. Can you please discuss something about your book "What the Hell, A Life Testimony"? This book was me facing myself and all the trauma that I had growing up as a child without a mother who passed when I was three years old and being raised by a single dad. This is a story of how trauma was a huge reason as to why I made a lot of bad decisions such as looking for love in all the wrong places. Also, of how I lived my life trying to please everyone so I lost myself in listening to their thoughts of how I should be.
7. Tell us about your magazine "Revive International Magazine." ReVive International is a women’s magazine that I created to give women globally a voice. It is still in its inception stage, but I want all women to have a place to tell her story, share her gifts and also plant seeds of life into others that need a hand of hope. This magazine is about healing, success, abundance, real life and a true sisterhood of coming together as one. I want women from other countries to learn from each other’s culture to the point of seeing that we are not so different and we go through the same struggles, successes, and most of all that we have the same heart.
8. What do you always advise to women who have had traumatic experiences, victims of abuse and abandonment? The one thing that I learned is that burying it does not help. Also, the hardest thing to do is face it, but it is the only way to not deal with triggers, and not being stuck in a bubble of safety which keeps us from looking at the source of the pain. It gives us a chance to not only forgive anyone that has hurt us, but also forgive ourselves for giving so much attention and power over to others and the past. We can’t change the past, but we can take control of how we live moving forward. It is our life and we don’t need anyone’s permission to make it great and live all of our dreams to the fullest.
